Rotherham v Bristol Rovers, sat April 21st, New York Stadium, 2-0
In the penultimate home league game of the season a win for the Millers would secure that all important play-off place, and make us firm favourites for that coveted fourth spot. This would ensure that the home leg would be second, and that any extra time and penalties would be at the New York. Conversely, mid table Bristol Rovers had nothing at all to play for.
Ian had a gay hairdresser client to visit in the morning. He kindly gave him a trim, but he left him with a style that made his fringe look really short. I’m not a fan. The rest of us lounged about before umming and ahing about layering up. We decided on a medium level of warmth.
Everyone was there, including John, and Baz, one of Woolys more colourful friends. There were no seats on our row so Baz was left with the seat in front next to Keith. Now keith is old but has very firm views about the football, Baz Just has very firm views and a wayward mouth.
The fact that they had nothing to play for meant that the Bristol fans weren’t out in force, but the few that came were quite voiciferous.
As it happens the game itself wasn’t the greatest. The sun was out, and we were basking in it until Michael Smi ith robbed a Rovers player on the half way line. He surged forward, and with Warney screaming at him to go round the keeper he curled a beauty into the top corner. 1-0 the Millers. As we have since he came, all Millers fans are scratching our heads. Why did Bury let him go for free?
A damp squid for Bury, A shining star for Rotherham
In front, Baz And Keith were striking up an unlikely friendship with some in depth discussion of the players merits and faults.
After the goal the team seemed to be as sleepy as us and Bristol forced some chances. Half time came at 1-0
Second half it was much of the same with our passing going astray too much and Bristol looking the most likely. But eventually joe Newell managed one of his mazy runs and crosses which was deflected into the path of an incoming Keelan Lavern. 2-0 And game over.
At the final whistle the players were clearly delighted, as was Warne who cheered as if we had won the league. And Baz And keith bid each other a fond farewell. Bring on the play-offs!
