Rotherham v Fleetwood, Sat 7th April, New York stadium, 3-2
After the stutter of the last few weeks, the odd performance excepted, we really needed to get back in our stride and take some momentum into the play offs. Playing a really useless team would help. Unfortunately Fleetwood had a new manager and had won their last three. The team would have to face a hostile new York crowd without much backing though as not many of their fans turned up.
Fleetwood faithful at the New York
The weather had taken a turn for the better and with fewer layers than of late we arrived at a sunnyish stadium. The usuals were all there, I really must find out OMOTES name. Paul Warne at made a couple of changes, dropping Emmanuel to play Vaulkes at right back, and recalling Towell. He was rocking the Full Pep in his technical area
Our leader, Warneola
We started as if the players had been out in weatherspoons then gone for a takeaway! Fleetwood had a couple of chances before Rodek parried a shot straight to a Fleetwood player, who poked it in. 1-0 to Fleetwood after 5 mins. But we are made of sterner stuff these days, and, kebab or not, we were soon back in it when Joe Newells marvellous ball across the area caused a Fleetwood player to poke it into our net. 1-1
Michael Smi ith watches the ball home
With Joe Newell on fire it looked as if we would soon add to the Talley, but the fishy people held firm and half time came at 1-1.
Second half, with us shooting into the North stand, we carried on pressing, and soon were in front. A loose ball fell to super Joe on the edge of the box and he volleyed home to score the league one goal of the week.
Joe celebrates his number one status
Surely we would wrap this one up in style? But those fish men are more resilient under their new, hard to remember the name, manager. Back they came to win a free kick. A ball into the area, more slack defending, and a Fleetwood head smashed the ball into the top of the net. 2-2.
With joe Newell pulling all the strings we just needed a hero. Someone who would head a brick for his club. Someone with a magic hat perhaps? Step up Richard Wood. A ball in, a melee, a foot/knee/back, a goal for the Millers. 3-2
Oh, Richard Wood is magic!
The heart went out of the Cod Army after that. Super joey Newell did lots of tricky stuff that Messi would be proud of. Including plucking the ball out of the air right in front of us
Eat your heart out Lionel
But we couldn’t add to our tally, and Fleetwood never looked like scoring again. 3-2 to the Millers and a good, hard fought for, three points. After all that excitement we needed some food so we joined Caroline and Wooly at Goodfellas for an Italian tea.
Next up, league leaders Wigan away
