One wedding and six funerals

Rotherham v MK Dons, New York Stadium, Sat Dec 23rd, 2-1

The Saturday before Christmas is always a big day for football. Win and you can eat your turkey with zest, lose and you sulk till Boxing Day. What a splendid day for a wedding thought my friend Rachel! Obviously she booked it about six years ago. And she comes from Hillsborough so hates football. But still, it was damned inconsiderate of her. One mans misfortune is another’s good luck though, and James and Kathy (yes Kathy Walters) were the grateful recipients of free season tickets for the day.

The wedding was, obviously, lovely. Rachel looked gorgeous and the reception, held at Curley Hall, was magical.

We were delighted to find that the rolling results service was on in the warm Hotel bar while the photos were being taken outside in the freezing cold. Just before kick off the breaking news of the day came through. There was a fire at London zoo. Most animals were safe, but they were unsure about the Aardvark. Four meerkats were also unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, at the New York

Notice how the MK Dons fans came out in force for their big day

So back to the bar at Cubley Hall, And Notification came through of an away goal at the New York. Free kick vicky texted, round the wall and in. Refs rubbish and a woman linesman. All going badly.

More bad news. Leon from gogglebox had just died. How sad. Aardvark And meerkats still missing.

But wait. A text from vicky telling of a Millers goal. The MK Dons keeper let the ball slip through his fingers a la kele Roos with both Yates And Ayaji claiming the goal.

Then, almost immediately, Another text from Vicky. Absolute worldie from outside the box by Will Vaulkes. Did he flip, you bet he did!

Half time came and went, and we heard no more news until the 9 (nine!) minutes of added time were up. Victory confirmed. Two wins and a draw in the last three games means we have returned to the early season form. A very happy wedding day indeed.

Unhappily, the day was not great for some. Let’s take a minute to remember those who are no longer with us
