Flippin' 'Eck

Rotherham v Scunthorpe, Sat 14th Oct, New York Stadium, 2-0

Sat 14th October, Mels wedding day. Mel being Kathys oldest school friend. Indeed, kathy would be one of Mels bridesmaids, and Vicky was invited too as Kathys plus one. Consequently, Vicky would be missing a rotherham home game again. Ian, Chris and I were invited to the evening do, meaning we Would be at the game v Sunny Scunny. All week long the gay weatherman had been predicting a mini heatwave, and he was proved right with the temp up to 21. So at 9am Kathy and Vicky made their way over the road to the Carlton Park hotel for a girlie morning of hair and makeup. The end result was a beautiful blushing bride, a beautiful lilac bridesmaid, and a beautiful sister who wanted to be somewhere else.

Good news had come in the week, with Frecks injury not as bad as expected, although both him and Taylor would still be out for this one. Bad news was that midfield maestro Darren Potter would be out with a heel injury. In came Forde and Ball. Ian and I took a steady walk down after dinner and met up with John outside so he could avoid humiliation and borrow vickys season ticket. The usuals were all in place, OMOTE not even batting an eyelid at vickys absence. Even plastics* James and Danny were in attendance. I was a little worried by the lack of the playing of New York, New York pre match. Woolys  nieces husband, the usual pre match announcer, was absent and the new guy didn't have a clue. He introduced David Ball (we know him as DaBall) as David Bell!!

First half was very even, Scunthorpe are a good (in the context of league one) side. Both sides had chances. Then we got a corner. We took it short. No!! Short corners never work. We worked it out to Vaulkes 30yds out. 'Shoot' yelled the gambler behind. 'Don't shoot!' I countered. He shot. A bullet that nestled in the top corner. 1-0 the Millers. Vaulkes goal celebration is one of the best in the league, a cartwheel followed by a back flip. We love it! The last time he  scored was vs Wolves on the first day of the 2016-17 season, and Vicky has been waiting ever since for another one to come along. Bad luck Vick!

We got to,half time at 1-0

Second half was again tight, until a great mazy run by DaBall into the area. He beat four men before crossing to find an unmarked (why would you?!!) Keiffer Moore two yards out. He couldn't, and didn't, miss.

His 10th league goal of the season and 2-0 the Millers. After that we were never going to let it slip. This was the 6th win out of seven at home and the fifth in a row. First time that has happened since 2007. Keiffer Moore is the top scorer in the football league. We have scored more home goals than Barcelona. And we have cemented that fourth position in the league. Not bad for with a fitness coach for a manager.

We finished off with a visit to Mel and Martyn's wedding reception. A good day all round.

Next up Oxford away.

Man of the match

Ian - will Vaulkes. Excellent execution, and the goal was good too.

Guest appearance

Kathy - Richard Wood cos of his magic hat song

Footnotes

*Fairweather fans, vickys type.

Scunthorpe fans are obviously a bit thuggish as they needed a huge police escort home. They do walk very neatly though.
