Cobblers

Rotherham v Northampton, Sat 30th Sept, New York Stadium, 1-0

It is a truth universally acknowledged that when a legend returns to his old club he will invariably score a goal. More of him later.

It was a nice warm morning for the last day of September, and I had agreed to work for reasons known only to myself. It all worked out well though as I saw two magpies on the way. Ian had a more eventful morning as he was required to break up a tramp fight in the centre of Rotherham. All in a days work. As we left for the game the skies clouded over and the air was heavy. Rain was on the way. Would those southern softies crumble in the wet? We hoped so. The team was announced, with Sean Cummings returning for Will Vaulkes and Towell in for the injured Taylor. It was a full house with OMOTE, Keith, the gamblers behind and a full compliment on row G. There was also a return for our favourite pantomime villain. A mere five weeks after he practically tore Jamie Proctors cruciate himself, the notorious referee Trevor Kettle had been unbelievably given the game. It gave us great pleasure to discover that the Northampton fans also regarded him as the worst referee ever, with the two sets United in berating him.

Before the game we now play a rousing video of the Millers best moments, and the returning hero featured no fewer then four times. In case you don't remember him here is his finest moment in anyone's shirt.

When the teams were announced the whole stadium rose to applaud him, a lovely touch. Then we kicked off and all that came before was forgotten. In the end he was completely outshone by another striker. Keiffer Moore was unplayable. Despite Northampton putting three and four men on him he won every header and generally game them a torrid time. We could have had five goals in the first half, and Northampton had some good chances as well, but it was somehow 0-0 at half time. Then the rain started. It was coming down like stairods.   A foray down the right saw a shot by Cummings which the keeper parried, it rebounded off a defender and Keiffer Moore sneaked through the raindrops to slot home from a yard for his 9th goal of the season 1-0 the Millers

After that we had loads more chances to increase the lead, but ended up hanging on for the last 6 of the 4 minutes Mr Kettle added on. It was a great relief when the final whistle heralded yet another home win, making it five in a row. And not an Alex Revell goal in sight.

Next up, a trip to Rochdale

  1. Good read. I feel you ought to write a book although more about the tramp fight would have been good.
